Dashain, often referred to as “Vijaya Dashami,” marks the victory of good over evil and the goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura. According to another Hindu mythology, Dashain also marks the day when Lord Rama defeated the evil Ravana and rescued Sita from his captivity.

Nepalese across the country are participating in traditional rituals, feasting with their families, and exchanging blessings and good wishes. The festival, which lasts for 15 days, started with the planting of barley seeds known as “Jamara,” on the day of Ghatasthapana and on the 10th day (today), devotees offer prayers and receive Tika (a mixture of yogurt, rice, and vermilion) and Jamara from their elders. It is a time for family reunions, blessings, and cultural exchange.

People continue visiting their relatives and receiving Tika for five more days till Purnima (full moon).

The festival is a time for family reunions, cultural exchange, and unity, and despite challenges, it continues to shine as a cultural jewel in Nepal’s crown. Visitors are also joining in the festivities, experiencing Nepal’s rich traditions and warm hospitality.
