What’s to love about this new airline from Richard Branson? A lot. Let’s start with the obvious – really low fares on it’s routes between Australia and west coast USA. And super cheapie pricing on other routes to Asia and South Africa, with new routes being unrolled.

Other low-cost carriers, such as Jetstar, have very little to offer anyone other than a cheap ticket, that curiously often ends up costing considerably more when they get through nickel and diming pax for every small thing. Small things like charging for a tiny, well-used pillow, blanket, food, or a drink on a 9-hour transpacific flight do not add up to a great flying experience. And that’s if Jetstar actually does fly you to your destination, forget about an on-time record – how about their “are they leaving today or in a few days record?” We digress on another Jetstar rant, back to V Australia, who in fact offers a great deal in addition to super-low pricing on what are often very expensive routes.

For honeymooners or couples planning a destination wedding, V Australia is a good low-cost choice that delivers a lot. From the moment you arrive at their check-in counters you know they are trying to run their airline a little differently than most. The positioning line for V Australia says it all: Good Ideas Taking Off Everyday. So what makes them stand out? Mood lighting, soft rock music, and, yes, ground staff who appear to enjoy their job and genuinely wish to help you. We particularly loved the soft, flattering pink mood lighting at check in. Looking good before you’ve even gone on your honeymoon!

Once onboard you will find a variety of different features in all three classes of service. Importantly, Branson has not forgotten the masses in the back of the plane and offers mood lighting in the restrooms (we’re not going to touch THAT one), really decent food, self-serve snack bar in between meal service, one freebie adult beverage, plus all the sodas you can handle. You won’t be bored in the back of the plane either, each seat sports on-demand seatback entertainment system with a 9-inch screen, and a 32″ seat pitch, 18.8-inch seat width, and seat recline of 6″ – all of which is rather remarkable when you consider V Australia’s rock-bottom pricing.

Upfront they offer a stand-up bar plus all the usual suspects of a premium economy and business class. V Australia gets our nod for airline of the week based on it’s economy-class service and ability to treat folks in the back of the plane well. Really well. Thumbs up to V Australia for reinventing the skies that have not been so friendly to passengers over the last few years.
