Visit St. Petersburg Clearwater is launching an advertising campaign designed to highlight Pinellas County features besides its renowned beaches.

“Beach ads are all the same, with a couple walking along the beach,” said D.T. Minich, executive director of Visit St. Pete Clearwater, Pinellas County’s convention and visitors bureau. “We wanted to show that we offer great beaches but plenty of other experiences that other beach destinations don’t have.”

The latest media blitz shows Salvador Dali to represent the Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg, a sponge diver as a symbol of Tarpon Springs, and a Grand Prix racecar driver from the Honda Grand Prix race held in St. Petersburg.

Print, broadcast and Web site materials will cost between $4 million and $5 million, Minich said.

BVK, the ad agency the CVB hired last year, designed the campaign.

About $250,000 will be spent in New York, Pinellas County’s top feeder market. Columns in the New York subway system will be wrapped with scenes of sunshine, beaches and Pinellas attractions.
