It’s party time in Sierra Leone. Some call Sierra Leone, the Hawaii of West Africa. ravel and tourism has been on top of the agenda for many in this country.
Sierra Leone’s Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Memunatu Pratt launched the commencement of celebrations marking World Tourism Day 2019.
Dr. Memunatu Pratt spoke about the importance of job creation in the tourism industry and the role of the private sector. She launched an Exhibit showcasing Sierra Leonean arts and craft at the foyer of Miatta Conference Hall.
During a news conference at the Ministry’s Hall on King Harman Road, the Minister emphasized that it was the first time that Sierra Leone was celebrating World Tourism Day in such an elaborate manner.
On World Tourism Day, 27th September 2019 a Grand Float Parade takes place in Freetown from the iconic Cotton Tree to Youyi Building.
Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh is expected to address the gathering.
This year’s theme: Tourism and Jobs: a better future for all is perhaps the most suited if the current direction of the Ministry is anything to go by.
Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Memunatu Pratt is aware that creating and ensuring equitable employment is essential to increasing social inclusion, peace and security.
As part of the celebrations, the Maiden Edition of the Monuments and Relics Commission Newsletter was launched.
Chairman of that Commission, Charlie Haffner says cultural heritage was the backbone of tourism.
Chairman of the National Tourist Board was very stern when he spoke about the importance of tourism and the need to focus on developing the sector.
The Private Sector is also commemorating the day with capacity building training of officials in the industry.
A guided tour of the City is also scheduled for Saturday 28 September 2019.
The Celebrations are taking place at a time when the Government is making the greatest strides to overhaul the tourism infrastructure in Sierra Leone.
