Camera-wielding tourists are flocking to a suburban Boston street for a glimpse of the scene where the alleged Boston bomber was captured on Friday.

Images have captured swarms of visitors and neighbors surrounding 67 Franklin Street in Watertown, while other pictures on social networking sites reveal people grinning beneath the street sign.

They are hoping to see the bullet hole-ridden boat where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was found hiding on Friday – four days after he and his brother allegedly planted bombs at the Boston marathon.

The nation watched in horror as gunfire erupted and SWAT teams swarmed the scene.

The boat’s owner, Dave Henneberry, has been commended for calmly calling 911 when he thought something was odd about his boat, which was stored behind his home, and saw Tsarnaev inside.

Tsarnaev surrendered after a gun battle and negotiations; it came after his older brother, with whom he is believed to have planted the bombs, died following another gun battle in a nearby street.

Now as Tsarnaev is being treated in hospital for a wound to the neck – just yards from some of his maimed victims – TV crews and tourists are visiting the scene.

Among the sightseers was Dave Lawrence, who came to Boston from New York for a convention.

‘I just had to come here,’ he told AFP. ‘This man [Dave Henneberry] is a hero for what he did. I would like to shake his hand.’

Nearby resident Greg Turner was out jogging and decided to divert to Franklin Street to see the scene, he added to AFP.

‘The bombs were already shocking. But what has happened here is unbelievable,’ he said.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, had been labeled Suspect No. 1 on Thursday by the FBI, who released images showing him at the marathon. His younger brother was labeled Suspect No. 2.

Violence broke out in the early hours of Friday when police received reports of a robbery of a convenience store near MIT and Sean Collier, a police officer, was shot multiple times.

Five others officers arrived on the scene in the middle of an intense shootout during which Deveau says over 200 rounds were fired in 5-10 minutes.

The chief said that one of the suspected bombers lobbed an explosive at the officers, which later turned out to be a pressure cooker bomb like the ones used in the marathon attack Monday.

At one point, the older brother came directly toward police, firing a gun at officers, but his luck ran out along with his ammunition, allowing one of the officers to tackle him.

He was in the process of being handcuffed by two or three officers when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev jumped behind the wheel of a black SUV and barreled toward the group, hitting his wounded brother.

He later ditched the SUV and escaped on foot. Tamerlan Tsarnaev was pronounced dead at a hospital a short time later.

Shortly before 6pm, officials announced that though they hadn’t located Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, they were lifting the lockdown and urged residents to exercise extreme caution and be vigilant.

After 6pm, David Henneberry walked out to his backyard and noticed something odd about his boat, that is stored behind his home.

‘He looked and noticed something was off about his boat, so he got his ladder, and he put his ladder up on the side of the boat and climbed up, and then he saw blood on it, and he thought he saw what was a body laying in the boat,’ Henneberry’s neighbor, George Pizzuto told ABC News.

‘So he got out of the boat fast and called police.’

Dramatic footage on Friday showed a police robot ripping apart the boat tarp and numerous flash bang grenades being thrown into the vessel.

He has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition after his arrest and officials say he cannot speak to investigators yet because he has been ‘intubated and sedated’ with a throat wound.

Henneberry has gone into hiding and his boat is being kept under wraps by police. Supporters have set up a Facebook group to raise funds for a new boat for Henneberry.
