Cinamon Citadel Kandy: شاندار استحڪام ڪارڪردگي

Green Globe recently recertified the four-star, Cinnamon Citadel Kandy in Sri Lanka.

The hotel is set against a backdrop of mountains nestled high up in the hill country, beside a quiet bend in the Mahaweli River. Guests can enjoy boat rides or explore nature trails and mountain treks to National Heritage and wilderness areas that are home to over 400 plant species, 70 bird species, 32 species of butterflies and indigenous animals.

The effective use of resources has been at the forefront of the hotel’s sustainability management plan. At the end of 2017/18 Cinnamon Citadel Kandy achieved a 7% year on year reduction in water consumption. This was due in part to the installation of dual flush systems in 48 guest bathrooms. The property plans to continue the changeover in phases in coming years. In addition, a monthly average of 83% of wastewater is recycled through the onsite sewerage treatment plant (STP).

Solar panels are used for heating all hot water at the hotel and almost five hundred 5w CFL bulbs have been replaced with 3w bulbs to provide more energy efficient lighting. On average, 60% of total food waste generated per month is converted to energy through the Bio Gas Plant further reducing overall energy consumption.

As part of its resource management strategy, the Green Team has taken it onboard to implement a
Utility Management System for the purpose of monitoring the hotel’s real time sustainability data. The system monitors power and water consumption, and any usage detected through preventative maintenance programs.

Social initiatives remain a key priority at Citadel Kandy. Both management and team members actively support local community programs that assist young women and students. The hotel provides donations for underage girls who are victims of violence at the Haragama Women’s Development Centre. Furthermore, uniforms are donated to students at the Technical Training College in Mapanawathura and information sessions about sustainability are provided for final year management students to raise awareness and familiarization with green initiatives.
