Cabo Verde Minister for Tourism and Transport Jose da Silva Gonçalves is in Seychelles on a three-day technical visit to learn from our country’s experience in sustainably managing its tourism industry as well as explore other areas for cooperation.

Minister Gonçalves, who arrived in Seychelles on Sunday, is heading a five-member delegation and yesterday morning he was received for talks by the new Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine Didier Dogley and other key officials from his ministry at the Botanical House.

Following their talks, Minister Gonçalves said Seychelles has a well-managed tourism industry and noted that his country can learn from our experience.

“An island nation on the other side of the African continent but we share many things in common and we cherish such values like good governance, democracy, and rule of law,” Minister Gonçalves stated.

“Seychelles is recognized worldwide for its sustainable management of its tourism industry so we want to learn from you since our economy is based primarily on tourism as well.

“You have a tourism which is more upscale than ours. We want to know the secret that allows you to have a more value-added and more sustainable tourism model,” Minister Gonçalves said.

Since 2014, the two island nations have been cooperating in fields like tourism, civil aviation and this visit is an opportunity to explore other areas for further cooperation such as the blue economy as well as exchange programmes and training in the area of human resource capacity building.

“I am looking forward to more collaborations and exchange of experience following this visit,” Minister Gonçalves said.

He went on to add that he will soon meet again with his Seychellois counterpart to continue their talks at the forthcoming UNWTO (World Tourism Organisation) meeting in Spain.

For his part, Minister Dogley said all island states face mostly the same challenges but none of them have solutions to all these challenges and the only way for them to move forward is to emulate what is working in some of those countries and learn from the mistakes.

“It is important that we establish good contacts for future information sharing, follow-up discussions exchanges, and networking,” Minister Dogley pointed out.

He added that both countries have a lot to learn from each other in diverse areas.

During his visit, Minister Gonçalves will meet and hold talks with key stakeholders in the tourism industry, visit the tourism training academy and different tourism development infrastructure
